Panther Turret number 215

Pz.Kpfw. V Ausf.G Panther (Sd.Kfz.171) turret number 215 under the command of Unterscharführer Krüger attached to I./SS-Panzer-Regiment I (“Kampfgruppe Peiper”) was one of a small amount of Panthers actually to have seen combat in the battle at Stoumont, and like his Kameraden Rottenführer Franz Prahm, his Panther was eventually knocked out by a U.S. 90mm AA gun on the other end of Stoumont on N33.
One of the interesting things about being a history student (READ:history freak!) is the piecing together events, this is made even more attractive when one finds ‘Die Deutsche Wochenschau’ footage showing evidence to help piece together events, or other aspects of interest.   This is compounded by the fact I am foremost a dyed in the wool “Tread-Head” more than anything else. My immense interest of WWII History, with my main focus on WWII Germany comes from my love of all things German armor. I’ve spent countless hours (and dollars) researching these vehicles and the events they were involved in.
Now that rant has come full-circle (jerk?) let us get on with the History crap as it were…

Panther 215 was attached to 1.Zug of II./SS-Pz.Rgt.I, which was one of the spearhead elements of Kampfgruppe Peiper, and in being so was used in a partially ‘prong’ role, as well as backing the Panzergrenadiers while going into U.S. controlled towns, such as Stoumont. This was the furthest point that K.G. Peiper would penetrate during that infamous and last concerted offensive effort of Germany in the West.

Picture one:
After the attack on Rouâ, the 1.Zug (platoon) returned to the entrance of Stoumont in order to continue the advance through “Rue du Village”. In the lead was the Panther of Unterscharführer Küger (Turret 215), which we see in this particular film still. Although hardly visible, one can make out the initial turret number.

Picture two:
Panther 215 still in its original position after being knocked out and before being rolled over to the left of N33 to clear the road. A serious fire which has caused the torsion-bar suspension to weaken to the point that the hull of the Panther is sitting on the road-wheels. The ferocity of the battle can be judged from the shell strikes to the turret side, a lucky hit to the barre that has rendered this Panther’s main armament unusable, significant damage to the cupola as well as damage to the tracks which are all visible.

There are several production features on this Panther which indicate that it was amongst the first batch of Panthers delivered to regiment at Grafebwöhr. It has the crew compartment heater (Kampfraumheizung) fitted, these started to appear on Panthers manufactured from the early to mid-September 1944 onwards and were standard piece of equipment by October of that year.
This vehicle also has attachment points for poison gas identification panels (Lost Erkennungstafein) visible on the turret roof which along with the standardized factory camouflage and absence of Zimmerit anti-magnetic paste indicates this Panther having been manufactured in September 1944 or shortly after.

Picture three:
Panther 215 shortly after being bulldozed off N33. The left-hand side drive sprocket has been badly damaged during the exchange of fire that would spell the end for Kampfgruppe Peiper’s progress west.

During the introduction of “Factory Applied Camouflage” efforts were made to increase effectiveness by applying small areas of contrasting paint to larger sections of the camouflage patter, this is often referred to as “Licht und Shattentarnung” or “Ambush” camouflage.
The Daimler-Benz plant have interpreted these instructions by applying small dots of contrasting color to the larger color-field giving a very distinctive spot pattern over the main color scheme which is very apparent in this and other photographs of Panther 215.
(inset)The distinctive tactical (turret) numbers used by Liebstandarte are also shown here to good effect, these consisted of a segmented white stencil outline with a black center applied in this case to the middle of turret side, no other tactical or regimental insignia were applied to this vehicle. The plate above the radio/driver has been buckled by a violent internal ammunition explosion which has caused a significant amount of kinetic energy within the homogenized German steel.

Picture four and five:
The latter type cast exhaust as seen in this photograph is another indication that Panther 215 was manufactured by Daimler-Benz. It is not until post December 1944 that Panthers can be identified as having been manufactured by M.A.N. have been photographed with this feature. This photograph is also interesting because it shows the right-hand side track is still in place despite of the damage caused to it during combat as seen in Picture two and the stress of a 45 tonne machine being bulldozed off the side of the road, the right hand side rear stowage box can be seen lying in the foreground having become detached during the process to clear the road.

Picture six:
Panther 215 has, by early spring 1945 become a tourist attraction, the wheels and tracks have not yet been removed and no damage to the lower glacis plate is visible.

“It has been said that trees are imperfect men, and seem to bemoan their imprisonment rooted in the ground. But they never seem so to me. I never saw a discontented tree. They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do. They go wandering forth in all directions with every wind, going and coming like ourselves, traveling with us around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how fast and far!”

thisbelongsinamuseum:

Automatons are always a bit creepy, so one can only guess why Laffing Sal was such a popular attraction at funhouses, boardwalks, amusement parks and fairs across the United States during the Great Depression and World War II. Originally mass-produced by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, this mechanical monster terrorized small children and annoyed the hell out of their parents for many years. Its never-ending laugh (watch this video and tell me you don’t want to run and hide) is made worse by the human doll’s appearance. Made of papier mache held together with fabric, staples, pins, nails, nuts and bolts, her ginger head full of curls moves forward as her arms wave up and down. And don’t forget that demonic cackle coming out of her gap-toothed mouth. Shudder. Believe it or not, people actually want to own this thing as original Laffing Sals can go for $50,000. I’d rather spend that money paying off my student loans and taking a trip overseas, but whatever. Several historic amusement parks still have the machine on display, like Kennywood outside of Pittsburgh, as well as the Musée Mécanique in San Francisco. But the place to see Sal is at Playland-Not-At-The-Beach, a museum devoted to recreating America’s bygone amusements. Did I say Sal, I meant Sals. They have not one, but three. Shudder x 3.

Oh, and just in case you forgot…here’s that laugh one more time. Sweet dreams!

Also I have spent years in the Pagan community don’t even tell me Wiccans are respectful of other faiths just

just fucking don’t

do not do it

I dated a Wiccan and she only bashed…

Oddly enough the word “Wiccan” was coined in the mid 20th century, and as like stated above is a mish-mash of what “they” wanted to use, and get by with that ole BS pastiche of “white light” spiritualism. How telling is it when you speak to one, and ask them the basis for their belief system it sounds an awful lot like Christianity, but with the head sentient being a woman. Just sounds too much like an inversion of Christianity for my tastes. I have no qualm with Pagans per se, as long as they are truthful with their beliefs and know the basis of it. This bleaching of any and all religion is ridiculous at best, and historical revision at its absolute worst. The next Wiccan who gets out of hand is getting thrown in a peat-bog!

OH-MEIN-GOT!!!! Not only is the one in the front a ME-109G…it’s a g/6 which has been retro-fitted with an Erla Haube canopy. I wish I could see the rest of the plane, especially from the left side, and the front to see all the yummy parts that make this a sexy variant. Just remember Erik Hartmann’s plane…

The Strange Case of Yukio Mishima

It was inevitable and necessary that Mishima’s act of seppuku was unsuccessful… His death slow, painful and tortuous, nerve-wracking to those around him, and anxiety-ridden as the beheading was not swift or clean either. A sign of the ever-approaching decline! And it was his destiny, and the era’s, to lose to the multitude, to lose honor, and to die in a perverse, lingering manner.

culturewithagrainofassualt:

The Zither-playing automaton Isis a creation of Dr. Cecil E. Nixon
(whose playlist featured over one-thousand songs - all voice activated)

In December of 1919, newspapers across the country carried the odd item to the left, describing the construction of a female automaton —- a mechanical woman named “Isis,” by one Dr. Cecil Evelyn Nixon, a San Francisco dentist. Described as containing 1,487 gears —- 300 in her breast alone, and being able to “play any tune requested on a zither,” the creation supposedly took sixteen years to build.

There’s certainly no mention of this mechanical wonder in the few earlier instances where Dr. Nixon received mention in newspapers, but we do learn more of this interesting fellow —- aptly described as a “colorful figure” upon his death in 1962. An eccentric, a dreamer, a skilled magician, and a self-described “Victorian Mystic” who dressed in frock coat, high collars and pince-nez decades after the style had fallen from fashion, Cecil Nixon was also a master showman and skilled self-publicist who, almost like the clockwork mechanisms contained within his automaton, secured newspaper space for himself at regular intervals between the late ‘teens and early 1960’s —- a remarkable feat in of itself for anyone of his ilk.

In June of 1917, Dr. Cecil Nixon was mentioned as participating in a Fairmont, California gathering of amateur magicians and slight-of-hand artists where he presented “a Hindu mystery with a real professional finish,” and in February of the following year at the “Golden Gate Assembly & Society of American Magicians” held in California’s Hotel Oakland, where he apparently partnered with one Dr. George Compton to present “new deceptions.”
In June of 1923, the syndicated feature to the right announced that Dr. Nixon (now dubbed “a lonesome professor”) had created a successor to his 1919 Isis automaton, this one named “Galatea.” Let’s enjoy the following sensational —- and somewhat sordid, description of Galatea —- supposedly in Dr. Nixon’s own words:
“Galatea, who plays upon a violin, has more accomplishments than even her elder sister Isis, who has already made a reputation as a zither player. How does she look? Galatea is a life-size figure of a woman. As contrasted with Isis, the dark Egyptian, she is a Nordic blond. The young woman, Miss Grace Carrol, who posed as a model for Galatea, is an American blond of Anglo-Dutch ancestry. So natural is the figure that as a distance of ten feet, she can be mistaken for a living woman. In her construction the union of art and science has been so carefully studied and applied that the automaton exhibits, while in action, the many graceful movements of a human violin player.”

“Galatea has the power to breathe —- air passes up through the nostrils and the chest expands. Her eyes move in a natural manner, and the flash of color on her cheeks deepens. She smiles, revealing her teeth. Both limbs and feet move slightly and shift their position during the playing of the violin. The entire coordination of these various gestures and movements provides the illusion of life.”

Anton Szandor LaVey had befriended Mr. Nixon before his death, and had told Doktor LaVey the most secret inner workings of his beloved Isis.

For further reading I suggest the book ‘Isis and Beyond’ The Biography of Dr. Cecil E. Nixon, available here from Feral House Books.

The Queen’s Android

Marie-Antoinette’s dulcimer player, forerunner of the robot.

Date: 1784, Paris, musée des Arts et Métiers

This famous android was a collaborative effort by two Germans. Clockmaker Peter Kintzing created the mechanism and joiner David Roentgen crafted the cabinet; the dress dates from the 19th century. Automatons were in circulation and aroused much curiosity. Roentgen probably sent the tympanum to the French court and Marie-Antoinette bought it in 1784. The queen, aware of its perfection and scientific interest, had it deposited in the Academy of Sciences cabinet in 1785. The tympanum is a musical instrument that plays eight tunes when the female android strikes the 46 strings with two little hammers. Tradition has it that she is a depiction of Marie-Antoinette.

Why are you posting about automatons, is human company not enough for you? This just reinforces my view you're a fascist creepo, I bet you don't have a girl/guy that you're intimate with either. Consider you now unfollowed.

BAHAHAHAAHAH. I suspect this comes from you being scared that your meaningless life shall be taken over by something with more to offer other than your inability to provide something of valid worth. If that’s the case, then you should be scared.
Most people (and I mean that in the most slanderous egalitarian way possible, you prole) are nothing more than a collection of bored, tired, consumerist-zombie mentalities. I’d rather have a handful of meaningful people who add to and enhance my life than to be liked by everyone.
“Time spent being liked, could be better spent on liking being.”

As for my intimate partner, I have one and I adore her like no other being on this earth, and if I had it my way I’d kill off the majority of humanity and enjoy her company, along with my cats, books and close associates.
My dear love is more meaningful, inspiring and enriching than I had previously thought a human-being could possibly be, and for that I am indebted to her. I’d give my own life for her to remain and give the beauty that is her to this forsaken mud-ball that is called Earth.
She is my all. Do not fool yourself into thinking I needed a warm body just to feel accomplished, one must be confident, and need not another to complete them in order to feel mutually fulfilled by another. I do not understand the herd’s need and caterwauling about being alone. In this world there is far too many like minded idiots to even attempt to be alone.
As for the Fascist name calling, I expect that from an egalitarian pleb such as yourself. You’d rather destroy any and all things that come from higher intellect, just so you can level the playing-field, and feel better about yourself.
I bet you have no actual knowledge of the meaning of that term, and furthermore I bet you’ve not done one thing for the betterment of your fellow man. And if you did, you made damn sure everybody knew it…I at times wonder what it is like to be in that little head of yours, scared of life and its wonders.

I now digress. I apologize to my peers on here who had to suffer my ranting at this fool. To you folks, and you know who you are, I cherish our mutual life enhancing interactions, each and every one of you.
