peashooter85:

The 8mm-06 Mauser,

After World War II many GI’s brought home 98K rifles captured as war trophies.  Many shooters at the time found that 8mm Mauser ammo was incredibly scarce. However, 30-06 ammunition was very abundant, so hardcore shooters came up with a solution, the 8mm-06.

The 8mm-06 is a wildcat cartridge that uses a .30-06 brass casing but is loaded with an 8mm bullet.  The brass would need to be reformed in order to accept the 8mm bullet, the easiest and most common method is through the use of fire forming.  My dad has made many wildcat cartridges so I’m very familiar with the process.  First you take an empty brass cartridge, you create a blank out of the cartridge by loading a primer, fill with gun powder (pistol powder) as well as cream of wheat (believe it or not), and then stuff in a cloth wad.  Once this is done you fire the blank cartridge through the rifle.  When the cartridge is discharged the brass will expand and form in the shape of the chamber.  Finally you load the bullet.  There is another type of 8mm-06 called the 8mm-06 Ackley Improved, which has a special taper in the casing which improves ballistics.  It requires rechambering the rifle for use.

Last year my father built an 8mm-06 Ackley Improved custom hunting rifle.  When he was fire forming the brass he forgot to remove the muzzle brake he had installed.  When he fired a cartridge the wad blew the muzzle brake clean off the rifle.

Dear followers,

This beautiful building is the Knights Templar chapel of Libdeau (12th century), near Toul (Lorraine, France). However, it is decaying very fast and it needs help. Plans for restoration are already finished, all that remains is, of course, the money.

If you want to help, you can donate via PayPal or by cheque:

Oh nooo! Please forgive me, I know this isn’t a history crush by any means, but if you’re a lover of history in general and you have a bit of money to spare or a place in your blog to pass it on I’m sure they would appreciate it immensely! They obviously care very much about this chapel and it always makes me sad to see pieces of history collapse like this. Thanks so much, guys!

(I’m just reblogging this one more time because when I originally reblogged it it was at 4am central time so I think a lot of people missed it; thanks again!)

Rosin Dubh-Strength Through Joy

Because we share our sorrows and joys
And your intimate thoughts are mine
We shall not fear the trumpets and the noise of battle
For we know our dreams divine
And when my heart is pillowed in yours
And the ebb and flow of their passionate flood
Shall beat as one through ourselves
At last the blood overleaps
The final barrier to find
Only one source wherein
To spend its strength
We two lovers long but one in mind
And when my heart is pillowed in yours
And the ebb and flow of their passionate flood
We two lovers long but one in mind
And soul are made one
Only flesh at length
And hope if this my blood
Fulfills the doom
When you dark rose
Shall redden into bloom

Once the Barrage lifted Richter stormed out ahead of his men, a savage and frenzied fight took place with most of it hand to hand. The Russian troops finally broke leaving many dead and wounded behind
