Memory Seals used for Ars Memorativa
The Art of Memory or Ars Memorativa (“art of memory” in Latin) is a general term used to designate a loosely associated group of mnemonic principles and techniques used to organize memory impressions, improve recall, and assist in the combination and ‘invention’ of ideas. It is sometimes referred to as mnemotechnics. It is an ‘art’ in the Aristotelian sense, which is to say a method or set of prescriptions that adds order and discipline to the pragmatic, natural activities of human beings. It has existed as a recognized group of principles and techniques since at least as early as the middle of the first millennium BCE, and was usually associated with training in rhetoric or logic, but variants of the art were employed in other contexts, particularly the religious and the magical.

Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova, commonly known as Saltichikha made her infamous mark with the atrocious killings of her serfs. She enjoyed torturing and mutilating her victims. Saltichikha was the epitome of boyar abuse of serfs in pre-reformation Russia. She pleaded guilty to the murder of at least 138 serfs at her estate, and the torture of many more. The name Saltychikha became a synonym for bestial treatment of the peasants.

During yesterday’s hurricane I decided to take the time to tackle a small book I’d been wanting to do something with: The Gist of Nietzsche. I spent the day beating and cleaning the transcribed text into legibility, as not only was the source a mess, but OCRing introduces many typographical problems.In the preface that I cobbled together you’ll learn why Mencken eventually disowned the book in private correspondences, but I still think it has value… though maybe not enough to put the slim volume into print by itself.
Instead, I’ve formatted it so it should be readable on most common eReader devices, and am offering it to Underworld Amusements customers as a “Thank you”.
