“When society reaches a stage where property confers rank, where wealth becomes the only source of virtue, passion the sole bond between man and wife, falsehood the source of success in life, sex the only means of enjoyment, and when outer trappings are confused with inner religion…then we are in the Kali Yuga—the Dark Age.”

A modified Dayton-Wright USD-9A became, in 1921, the first aircraft to feature a pressurised cockpit. The aircraft had “..an airtight spherical chamber in place of a cockpit. The chamber had only a control stick and small portholes to view the instruments, which had been located outside..” (via)

The bottom photo is via the SDASM Archives on Flickr. The photos appear to be showing different stages of the aircraft’s development?

“Siberia was wolf-haunted that year. They followed close on the scene of battle, feasting on the dead. Both sides strung enemy corpses on trees alongside the roads and the wolves gnawed off their feet. Perhaps it was these images that Ungern remembered when he spoke later of leaving ‘an avenue of corpses’ from Urga to Moscow. Sometimes, emboldened by the abundance of human flesh, the wolves grew bold enough to attack men, even - barely known before - men in groups.”

- James Palmer (On Baron von Ungern-Sternberg) in The Bloody White Baron.

When you mention "OCB Squadron" what does the OCB stand for?

Officer Commanding “B” Squadron, in the case of what you asked that would be Major I.B. “Ibby” Aird Who was leading that Squadron.
A typical WWII British Tank Squadron would break down as such:

Armoured/Tank Squadrons used Shermans, Cromwells or Churchills.5 troops to a squadron each troop has 3 tanks later reorganized to 4 troops each of 4 tanks,Squadron HQ had 4 tanks.
The Yeomanry Officer Commanding Squadron ‘B’ (in early Normandy Invasion tactics) would hold back his Squadron and reconnoiter the situation at hand. I’ve heard rumors that Michael Wittmann’s actions that day was 50% of  the decision as to why the numbers of tanks in a Squadron were up-gunned. To put it lightly, Monty’s blundering at Caen did a lot of damage to the plans. Not to mention putting his men into the worst situation. Personally speaking I say he was unsound tactically for the Normandy Campaign.

Ungern Sternberg is one of the coolest historical figures ever.

I agree, he’s one of those oddly overlooked historical figures who’d make for some very interesting reading. Granted his enemy would never give him that honor.
Having read the book that Mr. Palmer did, I am now much more hungry for information on Herr von Ungern-Sternberg. He was a no BS guy, brutal and very misanthropic. More or less a ‘Mans-Man’ in my not so humble opinion.

that book’s on the table by my bed and every morning this past week his gaze     has been the first sight of the day… eerie. Interesting man of stolid principle.

Indeed, I found out about him and the book while looking at Jack Donovan’s Goodreads reading list. He cuts quite the intriguing figure, both in his beliefs and the way he ruled with an iron hand. A good face to wake up to, and oddly enough his book has been on my nightstand as well, along with Julius Evola and Oswald Spengler.

I hate when people use the phrase ‘he tries too hard’!

I mean seriously, what in the Hell is wrong with trying hard? Isn’t that how we’ve gotten the bounties that we have? By people trying hard?
Are we that cynical and hipster-douchie…that people who bust their ass and try their hardest are looked at with derision?

Next time you hear some trust fund turd say that to you, TRY your best to PUNCH THEIR EVER LIVING LIGHTS OUT!

To quote Jack Donovan:
“So, stop worrying about being cool and be a try-hard.

Let the stupid hipsters nerd themselves out with ugly sunglasses and ironic moustaches and intentionally unflattering clothes so they won’t look like they are trying too hard to be anything worth being.  Let them live life like a joke. Let them be trolls and half-assed hecklers. Let them worry about looking too cool to care. I’m sure they’ll have a great time down at Big Al’s, ruling the local restaurant scene. Like, ironically.”

My name is Michael A. Kalb, and you’re gatdamned right I am a try-hard!

Plate 01: A New Zealand tanker stands next to a Panther Ausf.G belonging to I./Panzer-Regiment 26 which has been disabled by concentrated fire from Sherman ‘Fireflys’ belonging to the 20th NZ Armored Regiment near the crossroads in Palazzo Guerrino, near Sesto Imolese, Italy 13, April 1945.

Plate02: A few days later and the Panther is still attracting attention, this time from Polish troops. Parts of the engine deck have been “liberated” revealing the radiators and fan. The lack of foliage in this photo allows us to see the shape of the spaced armor with cut-outs for the lifting rings and the Nahverteidigungswaffe at the rear of the turret roof.
