Australian S.A.S.R. in country, Vietnam, 1967.
In 1966 the Special Air Service Regiment were transferred to Phuoc Tuy province Vietnam to face the formidable Viet Cong. But at first their exact role is unclear to the Task Force commander and he seeks to use them as infantry. However SAS determination prevails and SAS becomes the eyes and ears of the Australian Task Force. Official ignorance about SAS continues and infantry hostility to the secretive SAS is rife. But the small SAS patrols terrify the VC, who call the deadly SAS enemy they can never find “Ma Rung” – “the phantoms of the jungle”. By late 1967 SAS are winning the guerrilla war against the VC and morale is high.
