Hinterhalt Tarnung
(Ambush Camouflage)

In August, 1944 a directive was sent to achieve a more standardized pattern, camouflage paint began to be applied at the factory. “Ambush Camouflage”, consisted of a base of dark yellow (Dunkelgelb RAL 7028) with olive-green (Olivgrün RAL6003) and red-brown (Rotbraun RAL 8017) patches. On top of this pattern were added small contrasting dots of all three paints (save some examples of the M.A.N. “disc-camouflage”).
Here is a basic guide to the main three types of Ambush patterns used on the Panthers.
The
Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg (M.A.N.) pattern.

The Daimler-Benz pattern.

The Maschinenfabrik Niedersachsen-Hannover (M.N.H.) pattern.

It must be noted that while this directive was changed, it continued (especially on the Panzerjager 38(t)). In the M.N.H. inset picture a column of Tiger IIs are passing Panthers in the “corn-chip” camouflage. This pattern was also seen on Jagdtigers, Sturmtigers, Tiger IIs, Jagdpanzer IVs and even a handful of StuGs.

Armor Myths Corrections…
“Brummbaer” Sturmpanzer IV fuer 15 cm Sturmhaubitze 43
The Sturmpanzer IV was nickanmed “Stupa” by the troops.  The name “Brummbaer” or “Brummbar” was never used in any German report during the war.  The name “Brummbaer” is only found in Allied intelligence reports.

Jagdpanzer38 (t)SdKfz138/2 at theBMM plant,1944 years“Hetzer” Sturmgeschütz 38(t)
The Jagdpanzer 38(t) was conceived and designed as a classic assault gun.  The General der Artillerie laid claim to the design as the Sturmgeschütz neuer Art (new model) or Sturmgeschütz 38(t).  General Guderian wanted the vehicle employed as a tank destroyer.  In the end Guderian won and the official designation of the vehicle became Panzerjäger 38 fuer 7.5cm PaK 39 (L/48) - Sd.Kfz. 138/2.  On 11-Sept-44 the designation was changed to Jagdpanzer 38 - Panzerjäger 38 (7.5cm PaK 39 (L/48)) (Sd.Kfz. 138/2).

The name Hetzer was assigned to the E-10 project.  This was an advanced design with a powerful gun and engine.  While not clear it appears that the Czech design team misunderstood that Hetzer was a competitor’s vehicle and applied the name to their own design.

At least one E10 (
Einheitsfahrgestell Jadgpanzer) was built as evidenced in this photo. The E10 is the vehicle on the left on the right is a Soviet SU-122 (Samokhodnaya Ustanovka 122 mm)

L/33 Gun

There were never any Sturmgeschütz with an L/33 gun.  This was a notion created by British intelligence which misinterpreted captured reports and censored photos of a Sturmgeschütz Ausf.F with the muzzle brake painted out (Jentz).

“Saukopf”
Saukopf is a term invented in postwar literature.  The name used in the German reports for the cast gun mantlet on the Sturmgeschütz was “Topfblende” (pot mantlet) (Jentz).
