They are not an end themselves, but someone else’s means to an end. So, they are not educated for their own good, just for the use to which they are put. This is not only true of the literal historical slave, but of all servile classes in any society that divides its populace into those who work in order to survive and those who live off the work of others and therefore have the leisure to pursue a better life.”
