One thing that is universal is the misery of the common soldier. The Generals write memoirs never giving the full extent of the Soldier’s misery, inner turmoil, and emotional defeat. One can never, unless they were in the same situation understand that, most soldiers do not fight for ideals, but for each other. The comradeship of battle always elevates beyond any normal civilian friendship. This is what pains me, yet keeps me reading and learning from these men. Keep that in mind when reading about ANY soldier. They live in a world that has forgotten them, amid the swirl and fog of war…there is a human stripped of all we know as humane, just and ideal.
