Handwritten Letters...

I was speaking with my pal about Kenneth Anger and his not having a cell phone, or a computer and that he refuses to speak with people (long distance) unless they write him. Now obviously one would think to themselves and probably say; well yes, he is 86 years and hates anything new. Its actually far from that.
This gentleman prefers handwritten letters because he enjoys the tangible and tactile nuances of peoples penmanship. He feels more connected to that person, in a sense it is lesser magic and shows much of the correspondents soul. It doesn’t matter how well your penmanship is developed, but that you took the time to write him.

Which brings me to another point, I’m in a long distance relationship and my wonderful soul-mate has sent me postcards from her native country (Macedonia!) as well as a handmade postcard and various letters.
The connection I feel to these outwardly simple items is the same level of attachment as one might feel to a ‘good luck’ fetish. It has also made me reevaluate my penmanship. Don’t get me wrong, cellphones and computers have their place in my world, but in the most benign way. Emails seem callous, robotic and cold (with a few exceptions, but that is more or less based on the content and person).

I know this was a random topic, and will probably go unnoticed in the exciting world of tumblr and its myriad eye-candies, but it is my hope at least one person reads this, reevaluates their stance on sending letters and sends one to a person whose company they enjoy.

Wennschon, dennschon!,

M. Kalb
