An often mis-captioned photo from the Fall of Berlin. The dead Soldaten often attributed as being part of the SS-Fallschirmjäger-Battalion 600. At a glance, this would seem so. But, save for the fact that the SS-FJ-Btl.600 surrendered to Western Allied forces. Fighting on from the Oder river in April, fighting various rear-guard battles across North-West Germany (above Berlin!) until nearly depleted and finally giving way to American forces in May, 1945. One explanation that seems to make sense (after a colleague of mine sent a scanned and enlarged copy of the picture) begins with the “Danmark” Ärmelstreifen or cuff-title and “Danmark” shield. This makes sense as he would have belonged to Panzergenadier-Regiment 24 attached to 11. SS-Freiwilligen-Panzerdivision-Division “Nordland” and some Hitlerjugend elements who were in the vicinity of the Friedrichstraßa. This would put them near the zone of the Chancellery and makes the most sense. Now comes the fly in the ointment… The FG-42 and the M-38 Fallachirmjäger Stahlhelm, which leads this to be a staged photo, posed by Soviet propaganda.
