Tomorrow I head out to freeze my ass off in the plains of northern Indiana (12f is the projected night temperature) at an old Nike Missile base, which leads to my recent hiatus from tumbscrews (Tumblr for you non-sarcastic types). I am the Zugführer for this event, basically the “Mutti” so my responsibility has been raised tremendously for this event (researching German squad tactics, reading biographical anecdotes on various “Der Alte Hase”), and it is something I do not take lightly. The care of the men under me is more important than anything, these are my Kameraden on and off the field.
This is also an honor for me, and to me shows how much work I have put in.
Something to note is leadership is earned, and that said one must NEVER have your men do ANTHING you yourself would not do. Think Mr. Winters and Alexander Uhlig!
Cold weather events have always held a special place in my heart, the true Kameradschaft is always shown amongst us Soldaten. Sharing the last smoke, the last piece of bread, sharing the misery of the cold, but always smiling and showing care. This is not something that just happens, it is something that’s special.
Never take from these men.
THIS IS WHY I REENACT.
Expect an after action report.
To put into perspective the cold and insanity of this event, I present to you last years conditions.
Auf Wiedersehen!
