A Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. F belonging to Rommel’s Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) moves past a group of Soldaten as they remove rocks to improve their fighting position. Major changes on this Ausf. F included the introduction of 50mm-based armor, including straight front superstructure plate that was 50mm thick which incorporated a new Fahrersehklappe 50 (drivers vision port for 50mm based armor) and a Kugelblende 50 (machine-gun mount for 50mm armor). These last items were adapted from the Pz.Kpf.III Ausf. J. Dished drive sprockets were fitted to accommodate wider 40cm tracks, as were wider road-wheels. These were fitted to lessen the ground pressure that resulted from the increase in the overall weight of the more heavily armored panzer. The turret also recived a new two-part side hatch lids first sen on the 4/Z.W. (Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. E) chassis. This panzer is missing the second road-wheel from the first bogie spring, possibly due to a failure on the rubber tire rim, a common occurrence in the head if the desert. Note the spare on the side of the engine deck. The turret carries a three-digit Tac number, possibly 422 on its side, there are no other markings visible.
