“Thus the weeping maiden vanished.
Thus poor Aino sank and perished”
Illustration of the tragic story of Aino, found in runes three, four and five of the Kalevala ([link]). It is an epic love story, utterly and completely devoid of love. The bearded and partly divine stalker here is Väinämöinen, and the lady in the water is of course Aino, a young woman who was promised as a bride to Väinämöinen by her brother, but who refused to marry an old man and instead drowned herself.
