Sturmpanzer IV (early production) with a fresh coating of RLM 79 ‘Dunkelgelb’ and what seems to be a rather intact coating of Zimmerit.

A 75mm shot into the 30mm side armor above the second bogie has brewed this Panzer IV/70(V) of schwere-Panzerjäger-Abteilung 656. dislodging the roof in the process.
It was photographed by Canadian Army Photographers at a crossroads east of Materborn, near Kleve, Germany in February 1945 where sch.Pz.Jg.656. had been supporting the 84.Infanterie-Division. Armed with the powerful 7.5cm PaK42 L/70 gun, 80mm frontal armor and a low silhouette, these vehicles were a formidable opponent, but like all vehicles without a turret they were vulnerable when attacked from the sides and rear.

A Jagdpanzer IV/70(a) of 7.Kompanie/Panzer-Regiment 2 attached to Panzer-Brigade 106, here photographed by the US 1st Infrantry Division at Himberg, Germany on 19 March, 1945.
It would appear that vehicles issued to 7.Kp./Pz.Rgt.2 had stayed with the Brigade since their employment in the Alsace in December 1944. This example has a battle scar on the mantlet and evidence of an internal explosion which has lifted the roof from the fighting compartment.

Panzer IV/70 (V) (Sd.Kfz.162/1) was one of two variants armed with the same PaK42 L/70 gun. The (V) stands for the builder, Vomag. The most produced version, with 930–940 built in August 1944 - April 1945.

This Jagdpanzer IV Ausf. F was captured by American Forces along with the Jagdpanzer ‘Elefant’ (Panzerjager ‘Ferdinand’) in the background and shipped to the Armour Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland. The ‘Elefant’ is still on display at the Museum but it appears that the Jagdpanzer, after being taken apart for examination, was scrapped. Despite having the muzzle brake this Jagdpanzer already has the modified stowage layout with track links stored on the vertical rear plate and wheels on the engine covers. An interesting point is that the Gunner’s MG port, over the driver’s vision slit has been sealed and covered with an armoured plate. Note the entry point of an AP round alongside the vision slit.

A US Military Policeman stationed at 110th Station Hospital poses in a Russian “appropriated” Jagdpanzer IV L/70(A) at the Military Arsenal in Vienna.
Russian forces captured large amounts of German equipment after the battles in Hungary and put them to good use against their former owners. This example has the tracks on backwards, is lacking a roof, all but one of the hatches on its glacis, as well as the gun travel lock and has a rather disheveled looking engine deck. It is interesting to note that the fourth road-wheel is of the resilient steel type.

Two shots of one of the Jagdpanzer IV L/70 (V)s of the17.Panzer-Division that knocked out Sgt. Dabca’s and Cpl/Penkert’s T-34/85 at Bolatice. This Jdg.Pz.IV L/70 (V) was probably knocked out by 2nd Lt. Popovic of the 3rd Battalion, 1 CS independent Tank Brigade. Popvic’s T-34/85 was behind the house visible in the background of the upper photo and by opening a door and a window he knocked out the German assault-gun by quite literally firing through the house! The resultant explosion unseated the Fighting compartment and blew the roof off. The vehicle had three return rollers and Flammentöter exhaust

An early version of the Jagdpanzer IV armed with the long barrelled 7.5 cm Stu.K42. This cannon was based upon that used in the PzKpfw ‘Panther’.

The “Schurzen” armour shields along the sides of these vehicles were standard, though were quickly lost in action.

thedevilsguard:

The Jagdpanzer IV Ausf. F continued to be constructed at the same time as the Panzer IV/70. However, gradually all vehicles were built with the 1.5cm L/70 gun.

This picture shows a very late version of the L/48 vehicle with all the features of the Panzer IV/70, for example there are only 3 return rollers for the track. When this vehicle was destroyed the “Seukopf” mantlet was blown away giving us an opportunity to see the rest of the gun mounting. Note the internal mantlet and notice that the recoil tube has also been blown off along with the “Seukopf”. This is a late type of gun mounting with the undercut flanges. It is interesting to note that the side of the flange has been machined away to allow the larger cover now fitted over the MG port to swivel into place. The gun barrel of the 1.5mm has no provision for the muzzle brake on these late vehicles, whether L/48 or L/40.

““Man’s destructive hand spares nothing that lives; he kills to feed himself, he kills to clothe himself, he kills to adorn himself, he kills to attack, he kills to defend himself, he kills to instruct himself, he kills to amuse himself, he kills for the sake of killing. Proud and terrible king, he wants everything and nothing resists him… from the lamb he tears its guts and makes his harp resound… from the wolf his most deadly tooth to polish his pretty works of art; from the elephant his tusks to make a toy for his child - his table is covered with corpses… And who [in this general carnage] will exterminate him who exterminates all others? Himself. It is man who is charged with the slaughter of man… So it is accomplished… the great law of the violent destruction of living creatures. The whole earth, perpetually steeped in blood, is nothing but a vast altar upon which all that is living must be sacrificed without end, without measure, without pause, until the consummation of things, until evil is extinct, until the death of death.”
