StuG.III Ausf. G (Sd.Kfz. 142/1) knocked out 300 meters north of Hotel de Ville in Sainte-Mère-Église  by M4 tanks of Co.C 746th Tank Battalion supporting 82nd Airborne Division on D-Day +1(should be familiar to the brothers in the band crowd). The StuG most likely belong to the Pz.Jg.Abt.709/709.Infanterie-Division. It has received a significant amount of hits blowing the roof off the superstructure and the front off the mantlet among other things, but did they specifically target the muzzle break?

Hitler’s last appearances outside the bunker was on his 56th birthday, 20-04-1945, as Arthur Axmann presents him a group of decorated Hitler Youth members in the garden of the Reichskanzlei.

Did Alkett work for anyone, or were they under the direction of Dr. Porsche. Thanks in advance.

Alkett was its own entity. While on some projects it would take technical direction from outside sources in the production of armor, it was ran by directives of the Panzertruppen Inspektor, and other controlling factors. Of note here, a lot of the armor chassis tubs came from Krupp, after which they were sent to Alkett, Henschel, MAN etc. These were then finished by what ever firm was contracted for the work.

Poor Hippocrates, he just wants friends.

And people say I have no right to detest those who do not even possess a mere modicum of intelligence. I hope the spirit of dear Hippocrates beats them on their hands with a stack of wax tablets, until they look like Hippocratic fingers!

What first looks like a fairly standard Panzerkampfwagen IV is in fact something quite rare;a Panzerbeobachterwagen IV. This is the first and only picture as far as I know showing the turret roof configuration. The most obvious difference to a standard Pz.Kpfw.IV is the use of a Sturmgescühtz cupola with its 7 periscopes and the ability to use SF142 scissors periscope while buttoned up.A T.S.R.1 observation periscope was fitted into a mount to the left of the cupola, but is obscured by a box like item. An extra antenna base has been fitted on a plate where the ‘Nahverteidigungswaffe’ would normally be, near the turret ventilator, which itself is a later type with thicker armor. Mesh covers have been fitted to the top of the hull Schürzen while the long slim box in the left of the photo held the spare antennas.

Wilhelm Balthasar was born on 2 February 1914 at Fulda in Hessen. He served in an Artillery Regiment from 1933 but transferred as a Leutnant to the Luftwaffe in 1935. In November 1936, Balthasar joined the Condor Legion serving with the Aufklärerkette of Kampfgruppe K/88. He gained his first victory of the Spanish Civil War when, while on a reconnaissance mission, he shot down a Republican I-16 on 20 January 1937. On 15 March 1937, he joined Aufklärungsgruppe A/88 flying He 112s. He joined Jagdgruppe J/88 in September 1937. He gained a further six victories with this unit including four SB-2 bombers shot down in one mission on 7 February 1938. He returned to Germany on 23 March 1938. In the 17 months he served in Spain, Balthasar had flown 465 combat missions. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwertern und Brillanten in recognition of his feats there. At the beginning of World War 2, Balthasar was Staffelkapitän of 1./JG 1 and participated in the invasion of Poland. With the Blitzkreig of the low-countries and France, Balthasar was soon making his mark shooting down three Belgian Gladiator biplane fighters and a French Morane fighter on 11 May 1940. He claimed five French victims on 5 June, to record his 20th through 24th victories, and claimed a further four on 6 June (25-28). On 14 June, Hauptmann Balthasar was awarded the Ritterkreuz, only the second fighter pilot, behind Werner Mölders (115 victories, RK-Br, killed in flying accident 22 November 1941), to be so rewarded. In addition, he claimed 13 aircraft destroyed on the ground. He was considered the most successful German fighter pilot of the French campaign. On 5 July, 1./JG 1 was renamed 7./JG 27. On 1 September 1940, Balthasar was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 3. On 4 September, he was seriously wounded in leg over Canterbury in England in aerial combat with Spitfire fighters from 222 Squadron RAF. Despite the severity of his wounds, Balthasar was flying operationally 14 days later. On 23 September he shot down two Spitfires with only 88 bullets from cannons and MG`s. He claimed a further three victories before having to submit to hospital treatment for his wounds in November.

I get such a Kriegsboner for the so-called Vergeltungswaffen (Vengeance) weapons, I wonder if these were the ones that were found near Chateau Le Molay-Littry?

A T-34 Model 1943 approaches a knocked out German PzKpfw III and PzKpfw 38(t) during fighting on the Western Front west of Moscow in September 1942. This is an early production Model 1943 with the initial style of turret casting. The Model 1943 was characterized by a new hexagonal turret that was easier to manufacture, better armored and more spacious than the type used on the previous types.

A good example of a STZ T-34 Model 1942 with welded turret. This shows most of the key distinguishing features including the Barrikady hatchet-shaped gun cover, the front turret undercut, the rear turret flat plate, the glacis (and hull rear) interlock. This vehicle has a panel of applique armor welded to the hull front. The slogan on the turret side is “Za Stalina!”, For Stalin!

An IS-2m of the Polish 4th Heavy Tank regiment crosses a fascine bridge during operations in Germany in April 1945. This was an improvised short-term means to move heavy equipment across a destroyed bridge. Note this tank is lacking its last road-wheel, probably due to a mine or worn-out bearings.

A rare view of an IS-2m fitted with stand-off screen armor on its turret during the Berlin operation. While some of the anti-Panzerfaust screens were made from looted bed-springs, many were made by local Red Army mobile workshops as appears to be the case here.
