By the summer of 1944, a large number of Russian women were inducted into the Red Army due to a severe shortage of men. A number of women ended up in armor units, after being recruited from tank plants where they worked. They were already well trained as drivers, but some later rose in rank to command tank units. To the right is Guards Lieutenant Verla.P. Orlova who commanded the ISU-122 in the background with her husband Lieutenant Nikolai.N. Orlova who served as the vehicle driver. Their Guards self-propelled artillery regiment served with the 3rd Baltic Front in October 1944. Women made up 10% of Red Army strength by the end of the war, though the majority were used in non-combat roles.

A T-34 Model 1943 passes by a column of GPA (amphibious jeeps) during the 3rd Baltic Front’s liberation of the Lithuanian capitol o’ Vilnius on 13 July 1944. This tank is fitted out as a PT-34 mine roller. It has the yoke for the mine rollers attached, but the wheels themselves are not fitted. Usually, the tanks moved into the assembly area without the roller wheels and they were carried separately on trucks until they needed to be attached. The amphibious jeeps were generally used by Soviet razvedchik scout units to secure small bridgeheads in advance of the main body of troops.

“Thus the weeping maiden vanished.
Thus poor Aino sank and perished”
Illustration of the tragic story of Aino, found in runes three, four and five of the Kalevala ([link]). It is an epic love story, utterly and completely devoid of love. The bearded and partly divine stalker here is Väinämöinen, and the lady in the water is of course Aino, a young woman who was promised as a bride to Väinämöinen by her brother, but who refused to marry an old man and instead drowned herself.

BEELZEBUB’S DAUGHTER - HOW ZEENA SCHRECK ESCAPED THE CHURCH OF SATAN
Even by the standards of New Agey, cult-friendly LA, Zeena Schreck had a bizarre and abusive upbringing at the hands of parents who made the devil more famous than he’s ever been. Zeena is the daughter of Church of Satan (CoS) founders Anton LaVey and Diane Hegarty, as well as the recipient of its first baptism.
By 13, she had been completely indoctrinated by the CoS, received death threats regularly, and was pregnant. She went on to be ordained the CoS’s high priestess and spokesperson just as Reagan-era yuppies began to completely freak over tales of children being sacrificed in the woods by her congregation.
Against all odds, Zeena managed to rebel against the self-absorbed zealots who raised her and left the church in 1990 with her husband, Nikolas Schreck. In 2002, the couple founded the Sethian Liberation Movement, a religious body that allows people to learn and practice magic without answering to an oppressive sect and helps free ex-cult members from their troubled pasts. Somehow, she’s managed to turn her life of chaos into one of spiritual peace, and while I can’t say for sure whether she has magical powers, several times during our interview she seemed to anticipate exactly what I was going to ask her.

I can never wholly escape the doubt about whether the past ought best be forgotten, since it ended in such a singular catastrophe - above all, for the people some thought to be inferior, but also for ourselves. Is there a more convincing proof of the falseness of all our former truths?
There is another nagging doubt: Am I giving up my own self in the course of concealing my true identity as a volunteer of the Waffen-SS? Am I leaving behind the person I was (together with the dead and the outlaws) and trying to reach the other side, the land of the righteous? Am I already wandering about in a moral No-Man’s Land?

A great in-flight photograph of a Ju 87R-2/Trop (the carburettor intake, with tropical filter is on the other side of the engine cowling) over the Mediterranean. The green camouflage has given way to a new colour scheme which was more appropriate to the new environment, with a sand base (RLM 79 Sandgelb) on the upper surfaces and sky blue (RLM 78 Hellblau) underneath.
Fallschirmjager:
Holy-motherfucker of Gott…okay this happens to be one of my all time fave incarnate of the Junker Ju-87 serious of bombers. Between this configuration with the tropi-kit, markings and the weathering on this “Buzzard” (hey model builders this is Kriegsboner material) Also major kudos for the RLM (Reichsluftfahrt Ministerium) colors.

Have a thoughtful and reflective ANZAC Day to all my Australian, New Zealand and surrounding areas. Having an Uncle who was wounded in Vietnam was treated by an Aussie fellow (Lance Corporal Jake), I’ve always admired the Aussies. During the turbulent decades of the 60s-70s the world was plunged into fight another so called ‘Police Action in a little South East Asia called Vietnam. During this time was ANZAC days lowest turn out, protesters would spit on returning service men & women in the parades. But the real meaning of this day shines through for the brave women and men who not only fought on their own land, but had saved humanity in the far flung regions of the south west Pacific. From the ill fated Dieppe raid, on their own land during the battle for the Kokoda Tract, to become legends in Africa when faced by the Germans under the command of Rommel. The German’s nicknamed them the ‘Desert Rats’ for their tenacity during the Siege of Tobruk. Anyhow I digress and to everyone, give thanks for those women and men who were valiant and courageous in their service to their country.
And to a one Lance Corporal Jake, CHEERS BIG EARS!

Plate 01 (view from the drivers seat) A Pz.Kpfw.V Panther Ausf.G (Sd.Kfz.171) while in the final phase of construction at the NMH (Maschinenfabrik-Niedersachsen-Hannover) plant. This picture is most likely around the introduction of this variant of the Panther. We can deduce this by the fact it has Elfenbein RAL 1015 as its interior color. An order issued by the Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen December 1944 all production vehicles have all oxide primer interiors. In February 1945, NMH received notification to again start painting the interior of the turret with Elfenbein (ivory).
Plate 02: The drivers and radio operators positions inside the Panther Ausf.D (Fgst.Nr. 210042 completed at MAN in early May 1943) minus the fittings for the fighting compartment and the radio racks for the . The radio operator was expected to fire his MG34 through the MG port in the 80 mm glacis plate.
The Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen produced AK 7-200 synchromesh’s transmission drive shaft can be seen facing immediately to the viewer in the middle of the photograph, in front of the transmission is the housing for the 37MnSi5 tempered steel final drive spur gears as well as elliptical breaking system. The drive train combination of the Maybach HL230 V12 engine coupled with the AK 7-200 transmission proved to be too weak and this became a teething problem that was never resolved. To further illustrate this point, in Normandy, about half of the abandoned Panthers were found by the French to have broken final drives. However, at least the final gear housing was eventually replaced with stronger one, while final gear problem was never solved.

Plate 03: The ‘seat’ of a Pz.Kpfw. V Panther Ausf.G (early) turret race is being is being machined. By looking at the machine’s logo it is MAN (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg Nuernberg) production machinery. The plates of the lower hull are produced by Krupp and were shipped to the various production plants to have the rest of the machining done and complete the Panzer.
Plate 04: A view into the hull of the Panther (the bearing race seat has been machined) shows the double arrangement of the torsion-bar suspension, the battery bank, the drive shaft from the Maybach HL230 V12 to the AK 7-200 transmission. The object in the middle is the gear reduction box which produced a ratio of 13.4:1, which helped the drive train combo produce 20HP per ton.

Five completed turrets(mounting the dreaded 88cm KwK 43 L/71), ready to be mounted on Pz.Kpfw.VI Tiger Ausf.B chassis, were still at Henschel Kessel when occupied by the American forces in March 1945. All still have hangers for double link track welded to the turret sides. The last turret was outfitted as a Panzerbefehlswagen VI Tiger Ausf.B (Sd.Kfz. 267)with an antenna base mount on the turret roof behind the loaders hatch. The ring mount for the anti-aircraft MG was not welded onto the cupola periscope guards on the second turret from the left. The anti-aircraft was MG mount was present on the other four.
This version Panzerbefehlswagen or command/observation AFV carried carried only 63 rounds of 8.8 cm ammunition to provide room to accommodate the extra radios and equipment, and had additional armoring on the engine compartment. The Sd.Kfz. 267 was to have used FuG 8 and FuG 5 radio sets, with the most notable external changes being a 2 metre long rod antenna mounted on the turret roof and a Sternantenna D (“Star antenna D”), mounted on an insulated base (the 104mm Antennenfuss Nr. 1) which was protected by a large armored cylinder.
