This Sturmgeschütz IV (StuG IV) (Sd.Kfz. 167) was knocked out during the fight Pomerania in the Spring of 1945. Note the camouflage pattern was applied to the superstructure while the hull was not camouflaged at all. This vehicle has single 10mm armor-plates bolted to each side of the superstructure for addition protection.

Book Review: TOTENKOPF
Totenkopf by Charles Trang
Heimdal Editions
480 Pages
This book, which is more or less the Bible of the 3.SS-Division “Totenkopf” histories, packed with never before seen pictures, historical anecdotes as well as a general overall analysis of the Division during the war.
As with any history of the SS, the crimes of the Totenkopfverbände are inextricably linked to those of the Waffen-SS, and in this case it is rightfully so, as the Totenkopf started off as camp guards. I want to make a serious note here that not all of the Waffen-SS was attached to these “crimes” and point out the fact most of the Divisions were made up of various European stock who were at war with the ever invasive “Bolshevik hordes”.
Now onto the book itself. Those who are serious students of WWII history, the Waffen-SS and those wild days in the East will be indebted to Mr.Trangs work which nearly verges on the exhaustive detail as for the fighting record of Totenkopf and add to that a good summary of their tough leader the infamous Theodor “Papa” Eicke, a man whose very presence at a front would cause an almost Berserker like battle fever.
The pictures are all nice and crisp and presented in a large format (when possible) and an inclusion of various documents makes this one for the reenactor, armchair historian and student alike. The book is not cheap, but in this day and age of countless Waffen-SS history books, one would be VERY hard pressed to top this volume.
This book is a must read to get a full and unobstructed view of this elite unit in the ranks of the Waffen-SS.

“Harrowing of Hell”
In an apocryphal story known as the “Harrowing of Hell” tells that time in between his crucifixion and resurrection, Christ descended to Hell or Hades to bring salvation to the souls in captivity there. This story, a forth-century addition to the Gospel of Nichodemus, sounds like a syncretistic concession or a convenient embellishment to make Christian teachings more palatable to non-believers. Such a story could help convince a reluctant convert that their own ancestors (who could have never heard the Gospels) might also reach heaven through some mystery of Christs grace. But apparently some missionaries didn’t realize the utility of this. Such was the case with Wulfram, who was sent to convert the Frisians in the late seventh and early eighth centuries. According to the Vita Wulframi, the last Heathen King, Radbod, was about to go through baptismal conversion when he asked whether his ancestors were in heaven or hell, with all the other unbelievers . Radbod broke off the ceremony, stating he would rather be damned to live in hell with the honorable ancestors than ascend to heaven with a “parcel of beggers.”

Note the wire anti-grenade cage over the gunner’s Sfl.Z.F.1a sight opening and the Tropen (tropical) cast cover just visible over the engine deck lid as well as the fixed mount and insulated rubber base for the two-meter antenna, this was introduced with the introduction of the Ausf.f/8 in place of the previous style rotating antenna base.
